Best Free Online News Sites

The Guardian newspaper is primarily considered to be one of the most trustworthy and reliable news organisations. The paper was initially published under the name of the Manchester Guardian and came into circulation in 1821. In 1959 it became known only as the Guardian, a name which it retains to this day. In a bid to keep its journalism independent, The Scott Trust was established in 1936, and the paper made a pledge to ensure that all the profits were invested back into the journalistic process, rather than to line the pockets of shareholders.

The current paper circulation of the Guardian is 162,000 copies, but the paper does have a large online readership, not just in the United Kingdom but also around the world. Back in 2018, the online platform of The Guardian was recorded to be the fifth most widely read of it’s kind in the world. While it’s political leanings are categorised as centre-left, it has earned itself a worthy reputation as being a dependable source for news, even though many of its columnists are die-hard supporters. After adopting the Berliner format a few years ago, the newspaper announced in 2017 that it would be published in tabloid form from the following January. Like many types of similar publications, the Guardian is now smaller in size.

Despite its large international online presence, because the Guardian chooses not to have advertising, it is struggling financially as an organisation. It is one of the few trustworthy newspapers which have refrained from putting up a paywall, unlike the Telegraph and the New York Times. Whether the Guardian can survive as a free source of information in the future remains to be seen. However, for now, it is widely considered to be one of the best free online news sites in the world.
