The Future of Online News

Technological improvements have changed the news industry rapidly over recent years. As well as the explosion of online video we have also seen platforms such as Facebook develop innovative and sometimes problematic methods of news distribution. While broadcasters seem to be in a good position to monopolize on this interest in video print publications are struggling to keep up with the multimedia digital demand. This is primarily because while broadcasters already had access to video infrastructure those that were based in the print cohort have had to start from scratch in building video distribution methods.

News organisations are changing rapidly and they will invest more money than last year in their plans for online video. There are some who choose to refrain from using video citing reasons as finding reading more convenient and adding context to a story and having no access to sound as some of the primary reasons. With the move to video being the big story in terms of news production the other critical factor is news consumption.

Whether people choose to read articles or watch online videos a growing trend is that people are accessing their news through curated platforms such as Facebook and other social media. It seems fair to say that large organisations such as Facebook will continue to dominate public life but the way they are regulated looks set to change. At the moment, these large Enterprises are undergoing great public scrutiny in the wake of scandals such as the Russian involvement in the United States election and also Cambridge Analytica harvesting data from Facebook profiles.

If legislation in past to make online sites act under the same regulations as a publisher this will have huge ramifications on what content can be published and what can’t. If however they retain their special status then this will lead the way to a greater diversity in the media landscape if not necessarily accuracy.
